Biography

Blandina was baptized 25 October 1742 in the Machackemeck Church in the Minisink Valley by Domine Johannes Casparus Fryenmoet. The published transcript of the baptism record shows a date of 25 October 1743, but the year in this group of records is asserted to be an error. She was recorded as a daughter of Abraham Van Aeken and Jannetje De Witt. Witnesses to her baptism were Jory Westfael and Blandina De Wit.[1]

A second baptism for Blandina, the daughter of Abraham van Aaken and Janetje De Wit, was recorded in the Reformed Dutch Church of Kingston, New York on 5 July 1747. She was baptized by Domine Mancius. Witnesses at the baptism were Jurg Westfael and his wife Blandina De Wit (the same people who witnessed the 1742 baptism.[2] The obvious interpretation is that the first Blandina died and a later daughter was given the same name, but since Blandina was married in 1757, it is unlikely that she was baptized as a infant in 1747. Moreover, the baptism in 1742 by Fryenmoet was one that was treated as invalid because of irregularities in the first ordination of Fryenmoet, and most of the children that he baptized before his second (valid) ordination were rebaptized.[3] Accordingly, the baptism of Blandina Van Aken in 1747 is determined to be a rebaptism of the child who was first baptized in 1742.

Blandina Van Aken, "young woman" (i.e., not previously married) "born at Maghegmak" was married to Byrn Hemmel, "young man born in Irlant", in the Minisink Valley on 22 January 1757. The couple were both living in Maghegmak at the time of their marriage. They were married by Anthony Van Etten, J. P. (Justice of the Peace?).[4]

Three children of the marriage were baptized in Minisink:

  1. John, baptized 27 January 1759; recorded as a child of Bryan Hammen and Blandientie Van Ake; witnesses were Blandina's parents, Abraham Van Aken and Jannetje De Wit.[5]
  2. Daniel, baptized 28 February 1763, recorded as child of Brient Hamel and Blandina Van Aaken.[6]
  3. Abram, baptized 14 April 1765, recorded as child of Brient Hommel and Blandina Van Aaken; witnesses were Blandina's parents, identified as Abram Van Aaken and Jannetje Van Aaken.[7]

Van Auken-28 and Van Aken-80 appear to represent the same person because: I am firmly convinced that these two profiles are the same girl. She was baptized a second time -- see https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/160394/was-this-child-baptized-twice -- because the ordination status of Domine Fryenmoet (who performed the first baptism in 1743) was called into question. Since she married in 1757, it should be pretty clear that she was not an infant when she was baptized in 1747; if she was in fact baptized in 1743 (when she easily may have been a year old or so), she was at least age 14 at marriage, not just age 10.

The birth date field should be set as BEFORE the 1743 baptism, and according to the NNS Naming Convention her LNAB should be Van Aeken (based on the 1743 record), not Van Auken or Van Aken.

I believe this is the same person as Van_Aken-80, and that she didn't die young, but rather was baptized twice (several years apart) due to irregularities in the ordination of the minister who performed the first baptism. See http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/160394/was-this-child-baptized-twice

I now believe that Blandina was baptized twice, first in 1743 in Minisink and later in 1747 in Kingston, due to concern about the ordination status of the minister who baptized her the first time. This would explain how should could have married and started having children in 1759.

I will start a G2G discussion on this.

This profile is wrong. It was created from merging the profiles for two completely different people. One Blandina was baptized in 1743 in Minisink and apparently died young. The other was baptized in 1747 in Kingston and grew up to marry and have children. One of these women needs to be split into a completely separate profile, once the biographical details are sorted out. Sources would help!

UPDATE: I took care of this.
